Territoire de Belfort

A Small Territory with a Big History

Our strategic location, at the crossroads of Alsace, Franche-Comté and Switzerland, means you can discover a wide variety of landscapes.

As France's smallest provincial department, the Territoire de Belfort boasts a huge diversity of landscapes shaped by historical and geographical influences. Authentic, unspoilt nature: Ballon d'Alsace and the Vosges mountains, a hiker's paradise, the Malsaucy lake, the Sundgau region, rich in lakes and rivers and bucolic walks. Belfort presents its Bartholdi lion, its citadel designed by Vauban, the Fort and a visit to its Grand Souterrain.

From the Croix plateau the panorama stretches from the Monts d'Ajoie in Switzerland, to the Jura mountains, via the Forêt-Noire, the Alsace plain and of course the Vosges.

If you're a keen walker, there are hundreds of kilometres of signposted footpaths criss-crossing the department, enabling you to discover its landscapes, flora and fauna, as well as its history, on foot or by mountain bike on a variety of routes: fortifications, milestones, mines, canals, châteaux, Churches...

The Malsaucy lake, renowned for its Eurokéennes festival, also allows swimming and sailing, a privileged site for the "La Maison de l'Environnement" for a discovery of the flora and fauna of the region, which enables everyone, young and old, to understand the relationship we live with our environment.
