The fortification of Belfort was commissioned by Louis IVX à Vauban and work began at the end of the 17th century.
The works gradually expanded and the citadel became the scene of numerous conflicts and sieges.
We remember from contemporary times the relentless resistance put up by Colonel Denfert-Rochereau to hold the town and citadel against the Prussians (1870-1871).
France capitulated but unbeaten Belfort was not defeated by Prussia. As a result of this event, Belfort then found itself split off from the Haut-Rhin and Alsace, which was conceded to Prussia.
The French capitulated.
The Alsatian sculptor Auguste BARTHOLDI érigera the lion of Befort in honour of the town's resistance (1875-1880).
The monumental work in grey ( 22 x 11 metres) is located at the foot of the Citadel and dominates the old town.
